A free public conference organised by the Enterprise of Culture and Rethinking Textiles projects (based at the University of Leeds).

Rethinking textiles: Yorkshire edition was a one-day workshop in spring 2016 which presented new approaches to the history of textiles and the Industrial Revolution among different interpreters, including museum professionals, academics and educators.

Speakers from academia, museums, archives and public organisations addressed a wide range of topics under broad themes including:

The Industrial Revolution reconsidered
Leeds: tweeds and tailors
Bradford and the wider world
Textile history through archival collections
Cloth Halls, mills and global brands

The event included an opportunity for a selection of attendees to share current work in a short set of lightening talks, guest chaired by Heritage Show + Tell, plus time for delegates to explore Leeds City Museum.

This event was open to anyone with an interest in textile history and brought together researchers, curators, educators, students and the wider public.

For more information, including details of talks and speakers, see the menus to the left.

This workshop was a collaboration between two major research projects at the University of Leeds: Rethinking Textiles and The Enterprise of Culture. Rethinking Textiles was a two-year collaboration between Dr Barbara Hahn of Texas Tech University and Professor Regina Lee Blaszczyk at the University of Leeds to launch an effort to re-contextualize the history of the British Industrial Revolution. The event was funded by the Marie Curie People Programme of the European Commission.
