Professor Hartmut Berghoff

Prof. Dr. Hartmut BerghoffHartmut Berghoff is Director of the German Historical Institute, an independent center for advanced study in Washington DC, and Professor of Economic and Social History at the University Göttingen in Germany. In 2002/03 he was a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin (Wissenschaftskolleg). In 2006 he worked as Alfred D. Chandler, Jr, International Visiting Scholar at Harvard Business School.

He was a Trustee of the Business History Conference in the U.S., and still is a member of the editorial boards of Business History Review and Enterprise and Society as well as among other appointments a referee for the European Science Foundation. He also serves on the Board of the Central European History Society.

His fields of expertise are the history of consumption, business history, immigration history and the history of modern Germany.

He recent co-edited 'Globalizing Beauty: Consumerism and Body Aesthetics in the Twentieth Century' as well as two books with CUP on 'Business in the Age of Extremes' and on 'The East German Economy'.
